An actinic keratosis is a rough, scaly or crusted area caused by cumulative ultraviolet exposure. It commonly develops on sun-exposed sites such as the face, scalp, ears, forearms and backs of the hands. These lesions are considered precancerous because a small proportion can develop into squamous cell carcinoma.
