Contact Dermatitis

Common triggers include soaps, sanitiser, cleaning products, fragrances, cosmetics, hair dye, metals, gloves and workplace chemicals. The location and timing of a rash often provide important clues. In persistent or recurrent cases, patch testing may be recommended to investigate delayed contact allergies.

• A rash that appears after using a new product
• Persistent hand eczema or occupational skin irritation
• Itching beneath jewellery, watches, gloves or clothing fasteners
• A recurring facial, eyelid, scalp or neck rash

Treatment usually combines avoidance of the responsible trigger, barrier repair and prescription anti-inflammatory medication. The skin may take time to settle even after the trigger is removed. Bring a list or photographs of products used on the affected area to your consultation where possible.
