Eczema is a group of inflammatory skin conditions that cause dry, itchy and sensitive skin. Atopic dermatitis is the most common form, but eczema can look different depending on age, skin tone and the area affected. Symptoms often follow a pattern of flare-ups and quieter periods.
Understanding your triggers
A weakened skin barrier allows moisture to escape and makes the skin more vulnerable to irritation. Genetics, climate, stress, infection, allergens and irritating products can influence flares. Eczema is not contagious. A dermatology assessment helps confirm the diagnosis and identify factors that may be maintaining the inflammation.
Signs or concerns may include
- Persistent itching, especially at night
- Dry, rough, cracked or weeping patches
- Recurring redness, swelling or thickened skin
- Signs of infection such as pain, pus, crusting or rapidly worsening eczema
Treatment at Dermaporium
Care may include regular moisturising, trigger reduction, prescription anti-inflammatory creams or ointments and treatment of infection when present. Moderate or severe eczema may require phototherapy, oral medication or targeted injectable treatment. Seek prompt care for fever, painful spreading redness, widespread blisters or eye involvement.
