Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated condition that causes skin cells to build up too quickly. It may produce well-defined, scaly plaques, smaller spots, smooth patches in body folds, scalp scaling or nail changes. Psoriasis is not contagious and its appearance can vary across different skin tones.
Psoriasis can affect more than the skin
Flares may be influenced by stress, infection, skin injury, smoking, alcohol or certain medication. Some people with psoriasis develop joint pain and stiffness, known as psoriatic arthritis. Early recognition matters because persistent joint inflammation can cause damage.
Signs or concerns may include
- Recurring scaly or thickened patches
- Persistent scalp scaling that extends beyond the hairline
- Nail pitting, separation or thickening
- Morning stiffness, swollen fingers or painful joints alongside psoriasis
Treatment at Dermaporium

General health is also important, as psoriasis is associated with certain metabolic and cardiovascular conditions.
