Skin cancer occurs when abnormal skin cells grow uncontrollably. The main types include basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. South Africa’s high ultraviolet exposure makes regular sun protection and awareness of changing skin lesions especially important. When detected early, many skin cancers can be treated successfully.
Know what deserves attention
Skin cancer does not always look like a dark mole. It may appear as a pearly bump, scaly patch, non-healing sore, firm growth or changing pigmented lesion. During a skin examination, Dr De Jager assesses concerning areas with dermoscopy and may recommend a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis.
Signs or concerns may include
- A sore that does not heal or repeatedly bleeds
- A new or changing mole or growth
- A spot that looks different from your other marks
- A rapidly growing, painful, crusted or ulcerated lesion
Treatment at Dermaporium
Treatment depends on the type, size, location and stage of the cancer and may include surgical removal or referral for specialised care. Regular follow-up may be advised after a diagnosis. Seek prompt assessment for a rapidly changing or bleeding lesion rather than waiting for a routine screening visit.
