Vitiligo

Vitiligo is not contagious. Its course differs from person to person: some patches remain stable, while others gradually spread. Because other conditions can also cause light patches, an accurate diagnosis is important. During a consultation, Dr De Jager may examine the skin under a specialised light and consider blood tests or other investigations when clinically indicated.

• New or enlarging white patches
• Loss of colour around the eyes, mouth, fingers or body openings
• Premature whitening of hair in a localised area
• Emotional distress or concern about changes in appearance

Treatment aims to stabilise active disease, encourage repigmentation where possible and protect the skin. Depending on the location and extent, options may include topical medication, light-based therapy, camouflage advice and careful sun protection. Results vary, treatment may take time, and not every area responds in the same way.
